Bills on The Hill

Our legislators are always busy but they still find time to drive us a bit crazy with their bills. Here are a few they’re considering:

  • AB 357 – “Predictable Scheduling Mandate/Protected Leave of Absence” bill would impose a one-size fits all, two-week notice scheduling mandate on certain employers that perform retail sales activity. It would also penalize these employers with “additional pay” for making changes to the schedule with less than two weeks’ notice.
  • SB 3 – “Automatic Minimum Wage Increase” increases the minimum wage by $3.00 over the next two and a half years, with automatic increases tied to inflation.
  • SB 406 – “Significant Expansion of California Family Rights Act” would make companies of only 5 employees subject to the California Family Rights Act (CFRA) instead of the current 50-employee threshold. CFRA provides 12 weeks of unpaid protected leave, similar to FMLA (Federal Medical Leave Act). This bill will also expand the family members for whom the leave may be taken.

All I can say is… ouch!
